Our engine gave up at our last race and we needed to (finally) start prepping for real for the upcoming 2023 season. As everyone knows, we started knowing (less than) nothing about car repairs and this week we took on our biggest challenge to date, pull the entire drive train in our 1993 Honda Civic EG Hatchback, build an engine and transmission, and replace it into the chassis for a rapidly upcoming test day. Hear how things went and a ton of learning was had by all, even Bill. We were joined by Ryan Staub from Lockton Motorsports to discuss track day insurance. This is an essential area to consider if you cannot afford to walk away from your car in case of an accident. Track insurance and off track insurance can vary quite widely and is almost always NOT covered by your normal car insurance. It should also be a consideration for where you choose to go for your track days, HPDE’s and racing events. So much that we didn’t know and hopefully this helps you as well.

As Ken Hill said in his past podcast, the fastest lap is created by the driver who is on wide open throttle the longest. So how do you get there best? Do you roll on the throttle or feather it, or slam it down to the floor, etc., etc., etc. Also, does it matter? Does it vary from turn to turn? Does it vary from car to car or turn to turn? How many times do we say Ross Bentley’s favorite answer of “it depends”. Come on in and find out how we each do this and what the best way actually is.

So pick a turn, pick a track and what do you think you are doing and what you should be doing?

Hint: Ben makes several sad faces and Bill predicts that this episode may be saving Vicki at least a second on her next visit to the track.

Nik Romano joins us to start to dig into the aspect of the race car that we know the least about, the suspension and suspension adjustments. In this episode, we go into the most common different types of suspensions and suspension design and how they work and how these designs and adjustments can lead to some of the biggest gains on track. This is a great starting point if you know or understand nothing about suspensions and suspension adjustment (because we are right there with you). We learned a ton already in this part one and cannot wait until Suspension 101 part two.
