Nik Romano – Suspension 101 – Part 1

Nik with a suspension

GHiT 0430:  Nik Romano from Fast Sideway – Suspension 101 – Part 1

Nik Romano joins us to start to dig into the aspect of the race car that we know the least about, the suspension and suspension adjustments.  In this episode, we go into the most common different types of suspensions and suspension design and how they work and how these designs and adjustments can lead to some of the biggest gains on track.  This is a great starting point if you know or understand nothing about suspensions and suspension adjustment (because we are right there with you).  We learned a ton already in this part one and cannot wait until Suspension 101 part two.

Brake Pad Walk Back or Knock Back

Brake pad knock back

DwD 0378:  Racing 101:  Jargon – What is Brake Pad Walk Back or Knock Back

On our racing 101 series, we often go over jargon that can confuse you at the track.  In this episode, we start to talk about brake pad walk back or knock back.  This can occur on many cars and be caused by several sources.  We try to talk about what it would feel like on your car and what you can do to minimize its effect while on track.  We also speculate on what can be the sources in your braking system that can lead to having this condition.  Please fee free to expand upon our discussion, as we have rarely experienced this phenomenon on track.  As a bonus, we also discuss a few other brake pedal related feelings that you may encounter on track and what the cause of them are.

Optimal Mirror Positioning

DwD 0360:  Optimal Mirror Positioning Tips

One of the fundamental aspects of racing that everyone agrees upon is the importance of your vision and constantly working to improve it.  Unfortunately, when you are starting out, this is even more important since it is very likely that your relative speed is lower than some of the other more experience drivers on a track and it is demanding both in front of you and behind you.  On this episode, we look at several options for selecting and installing the mirrors, as well as the mirror positioning to help improve your overall vision.

Building a car vs developing a car

Developing a car

DwD 0341:  The difference between building a car and developing a car

Race Weekend Shuffle in place:  We have talked a lot about building a race car and prepping a car for the track.  But that Is only the beginning and just when you thought it was over, it has only begun.  The best way to think about it is that you now have a ticket to enter the event and part of your future will be developing the car and improving it.

There are things that will always need to be done.  Some of these areas are to increase the performance of the car.  Many of these areas are to improve the durability and reliability of the car.  There is also a set related to optimizing the car by dialing in the various settings and options within the car that you will be using to improve the performance on a given track or day or weather or.  Undoubtedly this is the first part of a multipart series.  On this episode Ben was joined by guest judge Jeremy Hall, Vicki, and Bill.

If we missed a factor or something wasn’t covered to a satisfactory level, please let us know at [email protected] or on our Instagram @GarageHeroesInTraining

Dashes, Switches, and Control Panels

control panel

DwD 0337:  Dashes, Switches, and Control Panels

Vicki has been hard at work upgrading our dashboard and controls in our Honda Civic race car.  She also has a favorite past time at a track by looking into each car and trailer set up to see what others have done and ideas that would improve our cars (and trailers).  We thought it might be a good thing to discuss our thoughts on control panels and provide a list of things that we like to see on a car and have found to be helpful in maintaining the car or preventing the car from having bigger issues.  On this episode Ben was again joined by guest judge Jeremy, Vicki, and Bill.

If you would like to comment on a favorite gauge, switch, dash, etc. that we may have overlooked, please send it to us at [email protected] or on our Instagram @GarageHeroesInTraining.

Even better send in a photo of a favorite dashboard, or a least favorite dashboard you may have or “seen”, lol.
