GHIT 0375:  Ken Hill – On The Line and the Fundamentals of Performance Driving

Ken Hill returns to the podcast to discuss the racing line. In addition, we go into the key, fundamental factors that contribute to consistent, fast, and safe lap times.  As with all things related to high performance driving and racing, the optimal line is really a complex solution to a series of variables. This includes track conditions, car performance, and driver skill. But the “line” is really fundamental with minor changes to account for the potential for the car to corner, accelerate, and decelerate.

In the end, the goal is to have the car in the right place at the right time to be capable to accelerate at full throttle for the longest amount of time.  The best way to approach this is to work backwards and therefore starts with corner exit and the point where the driver can safely put down maximum power for positive acceleration.  Then we should work backwards through the reference points of the turn to accomplish this goal.  The earlier in the turn, the more variable the position and the approach angle will be to car and track conditions.

The preferred strategy will usually focus on the critical points of reference with the prioritization of exit speed and angle for most cases/turns.  We also discuss the variation of the corner apex as a function of the performance of the vehicle.  Typically, the variation is much less than most think, on the order of a few feet, with faster cars typically having a later apex.  This is one of our better episodes and Bill is already on his third listen, lol.

What Line Is It Anyway?

– And Why Are There So Many

Which Line

DwD 0374:  What Line Is It Anyway? – And Why Are There So Many

A long time listener wrote in and had a question about “The Line”.  It appears that there are several lines.  One line is the school line or the HPDE line.  Then there is the race line or racing line.  It appears that the listener is stuck between the line the “looks” correct to them, and the school line and is trying to transition to the racing line.  All of this is leading to a bit of indecision and almost confusion on track.  Not a good situation.  In this episode we go over the various lines and how/why each exist and what to do to gain consistency.

GHIT 0373:  JG Pasterjak from Grassroots Motorsports

JG Pasterjak joins us for a great episode that starts off with a brief history of his driving and work with Grassroots Motorsports magazine and website.  In addition to being involved with the articles, JG is also a passionate driver and tinkerer on his car and many of the project cars that are the subject of many articles and threads within the magazine and website.  We are often searching the GRM website when we are trying to solve a problem or improve our cars for the track.  We also cover a recent fire that JG had in his MR2 and what he has learned from the experience.  JG was even kind enough to indulge us when we tried to discuss a few of the recent articles that have helped us and our friends.  Including the project of converting a road car to a track car.  We can’t wait to have him on again.

Crank No Start Condition

Troubleshooting part 1

wiring

DwD 0372:  Troubleshooting a Crank No Start Condition

On this Dominating with Dawson, we take advantage of a crank no start problem that we are having with our 1993 Honda Civic SI (D16Z6 for the home gamers) race car and use it as a working example of how to troubleshoot an issue.  As with most parts of working on a car, we are a work in progress, some would even say “In Training”, lol.  We utilize our pain to try to work through the logic of a car not working and trying to diagnose the issue.  If you like these types of Dominating with Dawson, please let us know.  We break enough and have plenty of issues with our cars to make this into a near limitless series long into the future.  Guest appearance from Jeremy during this issue.  We end with a diatribe on why we don’t let Bill fix our cars and rarely leave him unattended.

GHIT 0371:  Tim Burr – Our First Member of the Sorry For Party Racing Team

One of the fun things about meeting someone on the Sorry For Party team for the first time is whether they are in their race team regalia or in civilian clothes.  We have found that often we have met the same person twice without knowing it.  Tim Burr is no exception.  We finally placed the name and the face at the spring PittRace event and then he joined us for the Thompson event while racing with Jeremy’s El Jeffe Trophy Truck team.

This episode gave us an opportunity to get to know Tim a bit better and how he has progressed to this point in racing and life.  A great episode with a great person.  In addition, during this episode, we go into the history of the Sorry For Party team, What to do and what not to do or look out for as an arrive and drive driver, as well as an in seat review of both the El Jeffe Trophy Truck and the 3PM Cheaties Cressida.  And then we begin to make a great plan.
