GHIT 0349:  Dave Carpenter from the Three Pedal Mafia’s Cheaties Car

At long last, we have secured Dave Carpenter for the podcast.  Dave drives in the orange Cheaties themed Cressida with the Three Pedal Mafia team.  In addition, Bill drove in the Cressida at the last race in NJMP where it finished 6th overall in spite of Bill driving.  With so much to talk about, we tried to limit it to the Lemons race at NJMP’s Thunderbolt track, all about the Cressida, and how Dave manages the team and maintains a pretty strict budget and still routinely finishes in the top ten overall despite being out paced by a large fraction of the field.  Hopefully, we will have Dave on again to talk more about his racing past and iRacing. PS  Vicki is in full post race hangover/zombie mode for this episode.

Highlights for this episode include:

1)  Why Bill is scared of Aaron and what it was like to drive with a black flag “bonus” “print” on the windshield of the Cheaties car during most of his stint.

2)  How Vicki came to get her “secret” black flag early Saturday and the impact to performance and handling that a 40-pound cookie on the roof of an EG Honda Civic

3)  Several variables that need to taken into account when looking at potential upgrades to a car and the unintended implications to other aspects of the car in endurance racing.

4)  A quick summary of some of the other cars/carnage in the Three Pedal Mafia fleet at NJMP 2022.

5)  How 3PM was able to finish their collection of all 24 Hours of Lemons awards at NJMP this year and secure the missing “Halloween Meet Gasoline” award to complete the trophy case.  In addition, they we somehow able to manage a “Blazing Saddles” related theme and not be arrested, lol.

6)  Various ways that Dave has been able to successfully race while maintaining a budget and having a car that performs well and reliably.

7)  How to prioritize performance changes for endurance racing.

Coasting On Track – Allowed or Not

Coasting

DwD 0348:  Coasting On Track – Allowed or Not

One of the often quoted things that may have first come from Ross Bentley’s “Speed Secrets” book series is that you should never be coasting on track, but should either be on the gas pedal/throttle or on the brake.  Ross has been on the podcast several times and we have discussed this aspect of racing with him a few times both on the podcast and at the track.  We decided to get into it today and with Ben discuss whether there are any scenarios where “coasting” is acceptable or even allow for improved lap times.  If you have time before listening to the episode, please take a moment and think of any areas where you would think coasting can be the best option for a certain area of a track and then listen to what is no doubt the first episode of a multiple part series on this topic.

There was a minor interruption by our cat during the episode, we apologize for the distraction.  Lol.  We then moved onto ways for Vicki (and you) to gradually work on reducing the amount of coasting on track, especially before and at turn in to a corner.

If you have any thoughts related to “proper” use of coasting or why costing has no place on a race track, please let us know in a podcast review, on our social media, or send us an email at [email protected] and we can share it in an upcoming Dominating With Dawson.

GHIT 0347:  Jeremy Hall from Monkey House Racing

Over the past few years, we had met Jeremy at many events, but it was more in passing.  Jeremy usually races with his team called Monkey House Racing, but for the Pittsburgh event he was racing with the Skunk Oil Racing team and our team in a 1999 BMW 3 series, an E36 for all the cool dudes.  Unfortunately, the event did not go well with two incidents, one Saturday and another Sunday, both at turn 2 of PittRace.  Jeremy was driving for the second event and the car may not be repairable.  During the episode, we talk about the event, make several blatant attempts to draft Jeremy and his team onto ours.  We think he is weakening.  This episode was recorded several weeks ago just after our PittRace endurance race with the 24 Hours of Lemons series.

Highlights for this episode include:

1)  We talk about the event at PittRace and Jeremy’s history in motorsports and instructing for a wide variety of organizations.

2)  Jeremy’s philosophy for endurance racing and how it applies to being a successful team, as well as the difference in racing in the first hours versus the last few.

3)  How endurance racing is a team event and how the team involves more than the group you are racing with in the same car.

4)  What happened at PittRace when Jeremy was driving and what we all can learn from it.

5)  Jeremy’s team plans for the rest of the season.  Little did we know what would actually come to fruition.

Track Selection:  The Impact on Learning

DwD 346:  Track Selection:  The Impact on Learning

On this episode of Dominating with Dawson, we wanted to discuss an aspect of racing education that can often be overlooked – track selection.  The typical decision path to getting a racing license or going to an HPDE event or a track day is to find the closest track to you. Ideally, there will be an event that fits within your schedule.  This is likely to be what you do as well.  However, one factor that is neglected in this methodology is the impact that the track design and layout can have on your learning and progression.  There are many tracks that have very little run off room or walls, trees, rocks, etc. Especially if they are very close to the track. This can make a small off track event a potentially very large cost event.  It can also affect the comfortability of the driver towards pushing the car. This will then change their personal driving limits during the event.

Track Selection

We talk about a few examples of tracks that are very forgiving. Then we review a few that we have been to that have layouts that are not quite as friendly.  This is not to say that it is the tracks “fault” because in the end the responsibility always remains within the driver’s seat. It is their responsibility to maintain control of the car and determine when/if they are going to push towards the limit.  We love every single track but wanted to point out something that should be taken into account. This is especially as you are in your middle stages of learning and progressing as a driver.  As a bonus, for the exact same price, we include a great story of an early HPDE event in Ben Dawson’s HPDE history.

If you have any favorite tracks to work on your skills or push your limits, please let us know.  Also, if we missed a few of the higher consequence tracks or turns, please let us know. This can be in a podcast review or on our social media. You can also send us an email at [email protected] and we can share it in an upcoming Dominating With Dawson.
