Double Sucking

DwD 0479:  Double Sucking

What is a DwD without Ben, well we try again here with guests Mental and Jeremy standing in for Ben.  One area we wanted to cover is that there are multiple factors that can affect your absolute and relative performance on track, especially as you progress.  One of the hardest areas we have seen is trying to determine the relative contributions of what part is driver induced and what fraction can be attributed to the car, car setup, and track conditions.  Sometimes it may not be “you”, but even then “you” can often work around as best you can when the car you are in is all you have. Sometimes it can be both, or what we call double sucking.

GHiT 0452:  Fire Laps Converts Telemetry Data into Useful Actionable Information Easily and Quickly

Do you collect data and never use it or have time to use it?  Is data analysis almost another job at the track?  Fire Laps may be what you need.  Quick collection & automatic analysis.  Enter “GHiT” and you will get a free 3-months onto your annual membership.

David and Daniel from Fire Laps join us to discuss their new website that Bill is SOOOOO excited to use.  Fire Laps allows the input of telemetry data from a wide and growing variety of systems and then uses a ton of advanced algorithms and machine learning to translate the 1’s and 0’s or the “squiggly lines” that we usually get from our very expensive telemetry systems.  The software then compares your data with itself and the data of other similar vehicles to formulate a prioritized and actionable series of alternative track lines and pedal inputs to lead to a safer and faster way around the track.  So, does Fire Laps lead to faster times?  Yes!  Does it present the data from multiple systems in a single user-friendly interface?  Yes!  Can you compare your data to others on the systems, friends and otherwise?  Yes!  Plus a ton more.  The software is growing in capability very quickly and we cannot wait to see what other features will be added in the coming weeks and months.

PS Fire Laps is useful to the “spreadsheet” people out there but may be even more useful to the more visual/artistic drivers and teams.

If this sounds like something that you or your team needs, Fire Laps has provided a code for you.  Please enter “GHiT” as your promo code upon registration and you will get a free 3-month extension on your first annual membership.

GHiT 0430:  Nik Romano from Fast Sideway – Suspension 101 – Part 1

Nik Romano joins us to start to dig into the aspect of the race car that we know the least about, the suspension and suspension adjustments.  In this episode, we go into the most common different types of suspensions and suspension design and how they work and how these designs and adjustments can lead to some of the biggest gains on track.  This is a great starting point if you know or understand nothing about suspensions and suspension adjustment (because we are right there with you).  We learned a ton already in this part one and cannot wait until Suspension 101 part two.

Brake pad knock back

DwD 0378:  Racing 101:  Jargon – What is Brake Pad Walk Back or Knock Back

On our racing 101 series, we often go over jargon that can confuse you at the track.  In this episode, we start to talk about brake pad walk back or knock back.  This can occur on many cars and be caused by several sources.  We try to talk about what it would feel like on your car and what you can do to minimize its effect while on track.  We also speculate on what can be the sources in your braking system that can lead to having this condition.  Please fee free to expand upon our discussion, as we have rarely experienced this phenomenon on track.  As a bonus, we also discuss a few other brake pedal related feelings that you may encounter on track and what the cause of them are.

Optimal Mirror Positioning

DwD 0360:  Optimal Mirror Positioning Tips

One of the fundamental aspects of racing that everyone agrees upon is the importance of your vision and constantly working to improve it.  Unfortunately, when you are starting out, this is even more important since it is very likely that your relative speed is lower than some of the other more experience drivers on a track and it is demanding both in front of you and behind you.  On this episode, we look at several options for selecting and installing the mirrors, as well as the mirror positioning to help improve your overall vision.
