GHIT 302:  Race Weekend Recap:  Lucky Dog Racing at CMP

After a series of failed intros, Bill is interrogated tonight about how the Lucky Dog Racing at CMP went with Skunk Oil Racing.  It was quite a weekend and some hardware was taken home from the track.  As always, Cathy and the Lucky Dog family had a superb event. We were honored to work on our car in their garage all weekend, lol.  This is our fourth race with Lucky Dog and we wish we had raced more.  If you haven’t tried a Lucky Dog race, you really should.  This was a big weekend. We will have several other episodes reviewing the race with other cars and other teams from the event.

If you would like to help grow our sport and this podcast:

You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice. This includes the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating, that would be greatly appreciated.  Even better would be a podcast review. That would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving and we would greatly appreciate it.

For instance, leaving an Apple Podcast rating is very easy.  If you go to your podcast library, look under shows.  Then click on this podcast.  Here you can leave a (5?) star rating and enter your review.

We hope you enjoy this episode!

Highlights for this episode include:

1)  We start off with a few listener submitted questions.  We always welcome your questions.  The best way to send them in is on our email at [email protected] or via our social media on Instagram @GarageHeroesInTraining.

2)  From Mario:  We are all getting older, and I wonder how age has crept up on him. Ask him to rate his speed currently vs how fast he was at his peak. Is he getting slower with age? What is he doing smarter now, that results in a better lap time, and that he’d wished he’d learned earlier? Are there things he was doing at a young age that he can’t do as well now?

3)  Ian asked:  about his Lotus Elan and why he likes it so much.

4)  From Chris:  What were the few of the biggest changes that you have had since writing your first speed secrets?  Was anything “wrong”?

5)  Adam asked for some drills to break a plateau (same lap times no matter what I try)?  What should I look to do to get my times lower?

6)  From Reed:  Breaking mental barriers to carry more speed

7)  A shy adult road racer:  What order is best to read your books?  As they were released or something else?

8)  Listener to be “Elon”:  Have you or your drivers driven an EV race car?  Thoughts?

9)  We review our driving and our coaching report back and how Ross has helped each of us from his prior episodes.  Things such as:  What were the biggest impacts felt (primarily by Jennifer and Vicki) on track and also in their daily driving.

10)  Braking and timing of braking and down shifting within a turn, especially when threshold braking.  Ross provides some tips and strategies to help with this.

11)  We then move to a few Dominating with Dawson questions that we don’t feel that we have addressed well enough so we take this opportunity to gain some additional perspective from Ross and Ben.

Track Driving – With Nanny’s?

DwD 0297:  Track Driving – With Nanny’s or Without

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we go into another listener submitted question from Ron Mexico related to driving on track with the car’s driver nanny’s on.  First we cover from a high level what a driving nanny is and then we go into our thoughts on driving on track with the nanny’s “assisting” you and when/if there is ever a good time to use the nanny’s.

So what do you do with the driver assistance aides on track?  Do you leave them on or do you turn them off?  What factors would influence the use of them, like weather and student driving level/experience etc.?

Discussing and Defining “Tenths”

tenths

DwD 0295:  Discussing and Defining Driving at “X” Tenths

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we talk about one of those concepts that is always discussed in the paddocks, especially at HPDE’s and endurance races.  This week we go through a discussion of driving “intensity” that is often referred to in the arbitrary units of “tenths” as in driving at 8 tenths or 9 tenths or never drive at 10 tenths in an endurance race etc.  What does this really mean?  We discuss this after a quite side discussion on driving other peoples cars.  Then we wrap this up with a tremendous article that our friend Peter Krause and former guest wrote about an example of a quantitative description of his definition of each of the “tenths” from low intensity to the higher and highest levels possible.

We hope the discussion is helpful in not only starting to refer to each level on a common reference but also the discussion it leads to when describing and defining your own personal driving limits and target.

Andrews Rains on the 2nd Gen Apex Pro

Andrew Rains

GHIT 0202: Andrews Rains Returns to Discuss the Second Generation of Apex Pro

Andrew Rains returned to discuss the new second generation Apex Pro and the new release of the App.  This episode was recorded a few weeks ago, but we go into the latest changes to the Apex Pro hardware and the Apex Pro software/app and some of Andrew’s recent racing with Grid Life in the GLTC series at National Corvette Museum Motorsports track (NCM) a very challenging track with lots of turns and a wide variety of turns and use it as a basis for showing some of the information that can be gained from using the data and comparing it to another driver.

On this episode’s Dominating with Dawson, Ben, Vicki, and Bill go into the factors of VIR that make it the legendary track that it is and why Ben always refers to it as a benchmark for so many different types of turns.  If you haven’t already noticed, it is Ben’s favorite, lol.  We probably have started to plan another race weekend to our season.  Anyone coming with us or have a suggested upcoming event/weekend?

The Pocono video we discussed is at:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1RohRau9Hg at around 2.5 minutes in and no, this is not a normal occurrence.

You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc.

Highlights from this episode include:

1) How the data from the Apex Pro showed Andrew what he was doing well and where he had opportunities to improve at NCM.  Andrew also diagnosed how he could have changed his approach to the weekend and potentially improved his overall performance at a new and very complex/technical track like NCM.

2)  We then move into the subject of the new Apex Pro hardware and Apex Pro app that was released recently.  Luckily our discount code (above) works on this new generation hardware.

3)  The app has also been improved to help new users acclimate to the app and especially related to the Crew View aspect of the app that lets you view the live data being shared by any friend or teammate at the track or even if you are away from the track.

4)  We provide a review of how we use the Apex Pro on and at the track and how you can use it to improve during each stint and between sessions.

5)  How everyone can use the system and due to its simplicity, even those of us who aren’t big data people can get a lot out of the Apex Pro, as well as the updated app.

6)  There is even an upgrade program if you have first generation units and would like the new second generation unit.
