Marlon Sumlin

– Racing for Cancer Research (and Fun)

The Deuce
Team Force
Marlon and Lauri
Marlon

Marlon Sumlin joins us to discuss his racing history and how much fun he has racing and instructing.  He is a perfect example of how much fun it can be to drive a slow car fast as he routinely passes many “better” cars in his Mazda 2 across the country.  Marlon instructs and races in Grid Life’s Sundae Cup and B Spec.  This year he is also competing in the One Lap of America in the same Mazda 2.  Marlon also races to help support and promote FORCE (Facing Hereditary Cancer Empowered).  FORCE is a charity to support cancer research and Marlon has been working with them with his beautiful bride Lauri since she was diagnosed with cancer several years ago.  Marlon has continued and will continue to help promote FORCE to battle against cancer and in her memory.

Discussing and Defining “Tenths”

tenths

DwD 0295:  Discussing and Defining Driving at “X” Tenths

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we talk about one of those concepts that is always discussed in the paddocks, especially at HPDE’s and endurance races.  This week we go through a discussion of driving “intensity” that is often referred to in the arbitrary units of “tenths” as in driving at 8 tenths or 9 tenths or never drive at 10 tenths in an endurance race etc.  What does this really mean?  We discuss this after a quite side discussion on driving other peoples cars.  Then we wrap this up with a tremendous article that our friend Peter Krause and former guest wrote about an example of a quantitative description of his definition of each of the “tenths” from low intensity to the higher and highest levels possible.

We hope the discussion is helpful in not only starting to refer to each level on a common reference but also the discussion it leads to when describing and defining your own personal driving limits and target.

GHIT 0291:  Mark Petronis – Answers of F&F Story Time Questions – Part 2

Mark Petronis has set track many records and won more than his share of races but recently had a very serious on track incident and thankfully it looks like he is in the process winning his recovery battle as well.  We talk with Mark about all things racing and how he is a great example for the importance and effectiveness of the current safety equipment that is available to every driver.  In Part 1, we go over Mark’s history as a driver, his accident and the safety equipment that literally saved his life.  Part 2 will largely be Mark indulging us and answering our fast and furious story time questions.

Mark’s story is another great example of the great people involved in racing
