GHIT 0122: NASA Great Lakes HPDE at GingerMan – Post HPDE Review

GHiT at the 2020 HPDE at GingerMan
GHiT at the 2020 HPDE at GingerMan

Jennifer, Vicki, and Bill check in to review how the recent HPDE at GingerMan went with NASA Great Lakes.  We are not in our usual location and are recording under a roof in a KOA near Traverse City Michigan so there may be a bit more background noise than normal but we wanted to record while everything was still very fresh, even though we were all pretty exhausted.

Post HPDE
Giddy after the HPDE this weekend at GingerMan

On this week’s Dominating with Dawson, we go into a discussion to clarify apexes and Ben’s approach and how the point of rotation can apply to your driving, including a discussion of Ken Hill s podcast and how we should approach this during he (at that point) upcoming HPDE at GingerMan.

We hope you enjoy the episode!

Best regards,

Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan

Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team

Highlights from the episode include:

1)  We compare the structure of this HPDE which focuses on drills and with the COVID 19 separation not allowing for in car instruction at this point.

2)  The advantages and disadvantages of a lead follow, especially if it was a group of three this became more of an issue.

3)  How quickly NASA Great Lakes is responding to the new rules and conditions on track in a rapidly evolving climate and imposed rules by each state and track.

4)  What aspects of racing Vicki and Jen learned at this HPDE and what skills they refined during the weekend.

5)  How HPDE track days allow for focusing on the correct and repeatable line vs our racing where we rarely use the line and handle traffic while driving both on and offline.

6)  The drills we used during the weekend, including running the track in reverse.

7)  How a great track walk with a very large group led to great discussion and options for approaching several sections of the track that even some national champion drivers learned more about racing options at GingerMan.

8)  Ways to practice on your daily drive to help improve your track driving.

9)  Apex everything!

10)  The comparative differences between the HPDE 2 and HPDE 1

11)  The skid pad – Winter driving event we had scheduled for earlier this year is again one of the negative highlights for our season

12)  Vicki and Jen both had issue with getting their vision farther down the track, especially in the lead follow used during their HPDE 1 group.

13)  Both Vicki and Jen both felt their speed progressively increased on the track throughout the weekend.  It really was almost as if we needed a 1.5 level for these COVID impacted events.

14)  In car video issues during the weekend impacted our results but we discuss what we think the video will show of our driving through the weekend.  We shall see once we download our videos later this week.

15)  There were some pretty spectacular cars at GingerMan this weekend and we could not help but pick a few of our favorites that came to mind in our racing hangover induced state.

16)  Bill tries to work through Jennifer’s acceleration issues during the weekend and hos hypothesis is that she isn’t fully revving

17)  Bill inserts his foot fully into his mouth.  He will likely be sleeping in the bathtub for the rest of the week.

18)  Vicki almost got arrested for stealing as one night by mistake.

19)  Somehow, Vicki and Jennifer were introduced to the term Camber during our track walk for the first time.  Not sure how we missed it up to this point but apparently we did.

20)   We also went through our thoughts on the track and several of our favorite and more difficult turns for each of us.

21)  Vicki’s favorite track of the weekend was NamregNig (GingerMan backwards)

22)  Bill tries to get out of the hole he dug with John Pagel.

A few hopefully helpful suggestions for NASA we think are:

1)  Groups of two students with each instructor max

2)  Group cars and instructors by style, i.e. low HP cars with low HP instructor cars etc.

3)  Perhaps a 1.5 level with less lead follow and more with the instructor in the position watching the student from behind.

GHIT 0119: Eric Meyer – NASA Great Lakes Chief Instructor

  • Eric Meyer
  • Eric Meyer and Ross Bentley
Eric Meyer alone and with good friend and colleague Ross Bentley

Just in time for the upcoming NASA Great Lakes event at GingerMan, Chief Instructor Eric Meyer was kind enough to join us and discuss his past and current association with racing and instructing, as well as the genealogy and philosophy that has led to the current NASA Great Lakes HPDE program curriculum.  It is by far the best of the HPDE instruction we have attended across the country and we think highly enough of it that we regularly attend their HPDE events that are sometimes well over a 10 hour drive each way from us.  Eric also is another great counterexample of the false age-old adage about “those who can do, and those who can’t teach” as he has won a ton of racing trophies in Grand Am, World Challenge, and Touring cars, among others.  Our Dominating with Dawson segment goes over the practice of left foot braking, its potential advantages, and how to try to begin to incorporate it into your driving repertoire.

We hope you enjoy the episode and we would love to see you at the upcoming NASA Great Lakes event in GingerMan!

Highlights from the episode include:
1)  How he originally started racing at a track and how quickly and deeply the hook was set.
2)  Some of the issues that he encountered when first entering the sport and how they shaped his interest in helping others
3)  Where he sees opportunities to continue to improve our sport and how he can give back to the racing community.
4)  How NASA Great Lakes history has led to their focus on the educational path has led to the current HPDE structure.  It is a great balance of driving on the track with the classroom and download education.
5)  Eric turns the table on Bill to answer Bill’s own question.  It was tremendously fun and allowed Bill to brag about the NASA Great Lakes HPDE.
6)  A discussion on the priorities of teaching driving skills and situational awareness as foundational aspects of the NASA Great Lakes HPDE.
7)  We believe that we may have uncovered Eric is secretly competing in sewing.  We may be wrong.
8)  Eric also goes into some of the philosophy of what his team is looking for to progress through the levels as well as some of the criteria in transitioning from level one to level two, as an example.
9)  We discuss several of the drills that you will do within the various HPDE levels, some of which we have lovingly stolen and use on our track day practice sessions.
10)  We even go into some of the educational techniques former podcast guest John Santiago uses in the HPDE 1 classroom and track sessions.  Vicki and Jen will be getting the full experience next weekend.  Bill is jealous and will attend as many of their classroom sessions as his HPDE schedule permits.
11)  How has the COVID related challenges and rules impacted the event and the HPDE sessions specifically, especially the traditional right seat style in car coaching and the various group classroom sessions.  It sounds like things may be even better than the prior structure.
12)  One of the surprises we may see at GingerMan may have been revealed.
13)  Eric says that we need to add Mosport to the track bucket list and Bill is already pondering how to possibly get to the Chin event at Barber in November.
14)  Tips and tricks to the upcoming GingerMan event, both on track and off.  Jen is thrilled with the runoff areas GingerMan affords to assist with learning with less potential detrimental impact.
15)  We have an informal agreement to meet at the local microbrewery.  Now we just need to have time and energy.
16)  A Pinto makes a podcast appearance again, much to Vicki and Jen’s pleasure.
17)  We aren’t absolutely sure if Eric really liked our Fast and Furious questions but he really faked it well if he didn’t.
18)  Eric has a weakness, and apparently it is Mazda rotary engines.
19)  If you are ever at a bar and need to know how many kegs you can fit into a 1964 Oldsmobile Cutlass, this is the podcast for you!
20)  Bill forgets to thank Eric for an earlier long conversation they had related to Bill’s goal of becoming a qualified instructor as soon as possible.

GHIT 0103: Keith Tanner from Flyin’ Miata

Keith Tanner Racing
Keith Tanner

Keith Tanner who has literally written the book on improving the performance of a Miata, actually three books, and works with the team at Flyin’ Miata joined us for this episode to discuss his driving history and he was also willing to add to our recent series on the “Usual Suspects” and addresses many aspects of the use and optimization of all four generations of Miata’s/MX-5’s.  Since we have two MX-5’s on our team already and we are routinely passed by them at every race and HPDE event we have been to, we could not have this series without going over them.  The MX-5/Miata is one of the more flexible racing vehicles available and with little modification, it can be competitive in many types of racing, as well as being a perfect choice for HPDE and track days.  Additionally, the cost for wear and maintenance is quite low in terms of both cost and frequency, due to its light weight and the wide availability of parts.

Our Dominating with Dawson segment goes over the term Trail Braking, what it is and how it can be used on a track as you increase your skill and experience.

We hope you enjoy this episode.

Please subscribe to our podcast on iOS most use the Podcast app or Android users may use the Android App, Google Play, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Stitcher etc.  We have also added this to our YouTube channel, especially useful with subtitles if you are hearing impaired, as several of our drivers are.

If you could leave a review, that would help us greatly and you can also add any questions or topics you may want us to cover.

Thank you again and best regards,

Keith Tanner R&D
Keith Tanner often instructs on the Flyin’ Miata YouTube channel

Highlights include:

1)  How to choose which version of Miata depending on what your interests are and/or how your personal geometry needs may require, including potential to LS swap
2)  History of the Miata, how it came to be and how its racing pedigree arose and developed throughout the 30 plus years of production
3)  We mention Long Road Racing during the episode, but they have been recently replaced by Flis Performance for ND prepped cars for the Global MX-5 Cup Series
4)  How did Keith originally get into Miatas, including his gateway drug called Autocross and how he has expanded his interests and testing though the years
5)  How Flyin’ Miata develops and designs its parts internally and with its suppliers to serve a wide variety of needs and performance interests
6)  Can you say LS Swap?  Flyin’ Miata can!!! And it fits into a Miata as well, lol.
7)  Bill reviews how he came to have and lose the NB Miata to Vicki in a single day
8)  Overall advantages are lightweight, relatively cheap to operate and maintain, great driver feel, excellent handling and grip in turns, a great car to learn and develop your driving skill, and relatively bullet proof.  Disadvantages are relatively low power and acceleration (true momentum cars) and straight-line speed.
9)  NC Miatas (2006-2015) are in a sweet spot for depreciation and a bit larger than the other models.  It is also a bit difficult to install a full cage.
10)  NA and NB Miatas are a bit smaller, lighter, and “fun” to drive.  Downsides, they are getting pretty old.
11)  ND Miatas are smaller and lighter than NC, similar to the NA/NB’s and the power is increased above the others, especially the NA’s and NB’s.  Also it has the only adjustable steering wheel in the Miata family.  Weaknesses may be in the transmission area and you may want to augment the cooling.
12)  Recommends looking at used spec Miata for value, especially the 1.6-liter versions that are not as competitive in the series as the 1.8-liter cars.
13)  How to inspect and maintain your Miata, especially as the NA and NB’s are getting close to 30 years old or more.  Hint look at your cooling systems effectiveness, including the transmission and differential.
14)  Pluses and minuses of our Flyin’ Miata Stage II NB Miata, cooling and transmission etc.
15)  Advantages and disadvantages of the 5-speed vs the 6-speed transmission in the older Miatas
16)  Keith’s thoughts on gauges vs ECU control and how to tell if there is an issue without additional gauges and which gauges may be helpful in general
17)  Some of the potential issues involved with a LS Swapped Miata and some of the many issue that had to be addressed during their development to be able to have a system they could offer to their clients.
18)  We even get into the new ND and ND.2 models
19)  Keith discussed some stories about his past experiences in the Targa Newfoundland
20)  Bill and Keith compare stories when they both lost a wheel while driving and other lessons Keith learned while racing and testing over the years
21)  In the end, Keith even tolerated some of our more off the wall inquiries and concerns
22)  Alan valiantly tries to help a listeners with what gear to use when doing burnouts in a turbo NB Miata.

GHIT 0072: Race Bar Invasion – Part Deux

Race Bar Car-Toon

This week’s guests are once again from Race Bar, repeat offender, James Webb/The Jandy Man is now joined by Patrick McHugh/Richard Freelane, and Ben Dawson/Awesome Dawson, formerly of Winsome Racing and Race Bar pseudonym apparently still under construction, lol.  You can blame us for trying to wrangle another episode from the Race Bar team.  Instead of a visual guide of VIR, today we get a tour of a boat and the harbor by Richard Freelane.

We did manage to get a bit more of their team history and race car history and a few hints of things to come.  If you have or know of any crab related lemons vehicles interested in helping this crazy team, they are looking for you.  The stories varied in area, as we have come to expect from Race Bar, but they are always entertaining.

We even managed to have some actual race related information that could allow you to improve.  We knew it was in there, we just had to keep digging to find it.  Lol.

Highlights Include:

 1)  We talk through an introduction to Race Capture and a bit about Mega Squirt, what it is useful for and how to use it, especially important when you have a racing team with varied skill and experience levels.  We also look at the importance of lap times with respect to endurance racing and endurance racing teams.

2)  Special contacts to look for at VIR and Road Atlanta when your car needs a little extra TLC or repair, especially if you are looking for BMW or Miata parts.

3)  HPDE and how to get better at racing, both faster and more consistent.

4)  Somehow we had a quick review of both teams’ cars and their history.

5)  Brief tire and brake pad selection discussions for endurance racing.

6)  A comparison of the progress that can be made at HPDE’s and iRacing.

and finally, Bill picks Ben’s brain a bit about becoming a driving instructor in the future.

GHIT 0067: Watkins Glen HPDE Review

Watkins Glen International
Watkins Glen International

Welcome to our latest podcast episode where we review our Watkins Glen HPDE with NASA North East at the world famous racetrack.  We had a great weekend with 5 of our team showing up and two other friends from the Everyone Racers Podcast and The Three Pedal Mafia racing team, Chris and Chrissy.

Just some of the cars in attendance

We summarize the prepping of the many cars we brought and the debacle it became for almost every car we brought.

Cars we prepped for the Watkins Glen HPDE included:

  1. BMW E36 1998 race car
    1. Roll bar prep and Passenger racing seat installation
    2. Issue:  Will not start as we were prepping to leave.  Issue still TBD
    1. Roll bar padding and switch to racing seats and racing harness from OEM
    2. Issue:  4-point belts are not acceptable so hot swap at Watkins Glen to install two new 6-point harness sets
  2. 1999 Mazda MX-5 Turbo Miata with Flyin Miata Turbo
    1. Installed new roll bar
    2. Issue:  did not finish roll bar installation and did not remember to reconnect the battery before giving it to Jennifer
  3. 2019 Mazda MX-5
    1. Mostly no issue, except cleaning
  4. 2017 Toyota GT TRD
    1. Bad Lug bolts and Missing Lug bolts
    2. Waited until day before to get parts, ended up with bad hub threads and missing bolts, and doesn’t know how to click the pay button after registering for the HPDE
    3. Cue the sad trombone please
  5. 2013 Dodge Dart
    1. Did not have time to change to race seats, nor brake pads and fluid, nor tires from standard OEM
  6. 2017 BMW M240i
    1. No issues since Chris and Chrissy are always prepared, unlike us.
  7. Race Prepped Honda Civic

Brad was an excellent test passenger for three different cars on the track.  He reviews his first ever race laps in the Turbo NB MX-5 versus the race prepped Honda Civic vs a new Acura NSX.
