GHIT 0358:  Rally Wrap Up:  The 2022 Rust Belt Ramble

Rally Master Jeff Stobbs returns to report in live from the awards ceremony of the 2022 Rust Belt RambleRust Belt Ramble Rally between Detroit, Buffalo, Cleveland, The year there was a ceremony for dearly departed car makes of the past.  We cover highlights of the trip as well as many of the entries.  We are then joined by Finn, from The Car Farm channel on YouTube.  They entered the rally in their Buick Grand National.  Why is a Buick Grand National on a Lemons Rally.  Listen to find out.

One of the highlights from this event is the introduction of the Lemons Rally grill badges.  The badges actually began at the last rally, but we didn’t do a good job of interviewing so its new to us.  Lol.  Vicki also gets a few tips on what to do for her first upcoming rally this fall.

GHIT 0355:  Cameron Conover from Conover Motorsports

Cameron Conover has been working in motorsports for two decades and Conover Motorsports offers sales and service support of the entire RaceCapture portfolio, as well as mechanical support for your vehicle.  We worked with Cameron on our two RaceCapture installations and as always, if we can do it, anyone can.

With the recent upgrade in the connectors, it is even easier to install and connect a system and any sensors that you may wish to install into your race car.  Some of the capabilities that RaceCapture offers are real time telemetry in both the car and the paddock, as well as the ability to add several options available including real time tire temperature monitoring (up to 16 channels per tire), shift lights, pressure and temperature of any fluid or system, and the ability to message to and from the car when on track.  In spite of some of our stumbling explanations (difficult in an audio only environment), the system offers a tremendous amount of capability and is simple to install and use.

If this sounds like something that may help your driving and racing, contact Cameron and tell him GHiT sent you to save you zero dollars, lol.

GHIT 0353:  Chris Haase Racer, Lemons Judge, and Cookie Stealer

Chris Haase has been racing with the 24 Hours of Lemons for more than a decade and began judging a few years ago.  All was going so well until he stole a Cookie.  Lol.  We had been looking to have Chris on the podcast for a while but after last Month’s race at NJMP Thunderbolt, we had to bring him on and interrogate him a bit.  During this episode, we talk about a wide variety of cars that he has driven and raced, judging, Lemons tech tips, and how to race for a 4 hour stint (why????).  Bonus info:  Many early Lemons racing stories including long ago practice known as “The Curse”.  Vicki is beside herself.  This episode is a bit shorter than that and probably part one of many.

Highlights for this episode include:

1)  We start off with a simple one, how to improve when your current limit is self-imposed by your natural tendency towards self-preservation and what can be helpful in pushing through this ever so common barrier.

2)  When should an instructor move from an instructing role to a coaching role with a student or client.

3)  What to look at when looking at your data and video as your driving skill improves.  (and overthinking it like Reese).

4)  Advice to break through a plateau.

5)  What to look at when reviewing your in-car video at a track.

6)  The difference between being Smooth vs being Fast and Smooth

7)  Using anticipation vs reaction as well as the subtle differences between having an expectation versus anticipation.

8)  Some ideas on how to help a student who is lacking confidence or has had a recent bad experience on track.

9)  Vicki is still working on getting an understanding of what the friction circle is and several ways for what to look for and how to interpret it best.

As always, we had some great discussion with Ross on related areas and some unrelated areas.

GHIT 0349:  Dave Carpenter from the Three Pedal Mafia’s Cheaties Car

At long last, we have secured Dave Carpenter for the podcast.  Dave drives in the orange Cheaties themed Cressida with the Three Pedal Mafia team.  In addition, Bill drove in the Cressida at the last race in NJMP where it finished 6th overall in spite of Bill driving.  With so much to talk about, we tried to limit it to the Lemons race at NJMP’s Thunderbolt track, all about the Cressida, and how Dave manages the team and maintains a pretty strict budget and still routinely finishes in the top ten overall despite being out paced by a large fraction of the field.  Hopefully, we will have Dave on again to talk more about his racing past and iRacing. PS  Vicki is in full post race hangover/zombie mode for this episode.

Highlights for this episode include:

1)  Why Bill is scared of Aaron and what it was like to drive with a black flag “bonus” “print” on the windshield of the Cheaties car during most of his stint.

2)  How Vicki came to get her “secret” black flag early Saturday and the impact to performance and handling that a 40-pound cookie on the roof of an EG Honda Civic

3)  Several variables that need to taken into account when looking at potential upgrades to a car and the unintended implications to other aspects of the car in endurance racing.

4)  A quick summary of some of the other cars/carnage in the Three Pedal Mafia fleet at NJMP 2022.

5)  How 3PM was able to finish their collection of all 24 Hours of Lemons awards at NJMP this year and secure the missing “Halloween Meet Gasoline” award to complete the trophy case.  In addition, they we somehow able to manage a “Blazing Saddles” related theme and not be arrested, lol.

6)  Various ways that Dave has been able to successfully race while maintaining a budget and having a car that performs well and reliably.
