Pit Stops

– Practicing and Some Best Practices

DwD 0332:  Pit Stops – Practicing and Some Best Practices

Once you start to progress as drivers and as a team, one of the more important aspects of racing and one of the most overlooked and potentially ignored aspects of endurance racing is minimizing you time lost on track during the pit stops.  As always, the over-riding most important aspects is to maintain focused on the safety of you, your team, your cars, and the fellow teams in the pit lane.  We also offer a few of the lessons we have learned along the way during our journey.  Ben and Bill have apparently taken a silly pill during this episode and digress down a few different paths of humor(?).  Tips on harnesses, cam locks, radios and radio connections, pit entry prep by the driver, driver order optimization, pit organization tips/5S/Kaizen boards, detachable steering wheels, etc.

If you have any further hints that you’d like to share, please let us know in a podcast review, on our social media, or send us an email at [email protected] and we can share it in an upcoming Dominating With Dawson.

GHIT 0322:  Race Review of our 2022 Lemons PittRace Event

Tim, Vicki, and Bill are excited to review our latest race at PittRace with the 24 Hours of Lemons series.  It was a great weekend and we were joined by Ben after a bit of intro discussion.  This was Tim’s first Lemons experience but he is an accomplished driver, racer and instructor of instructors.  We talked about Tim’s thoughts and critiques of the Lemons series and the field of cars and drivers at PittRace.  This was our initial shakedown trial for our new to us 1993 Honda Civic race car.

Highlights for this episode include:

1)  Tim’s response to the three primary (false) criticisms of racing in the 24 Hours of Lemons series:  safety culture, driver skill, and the quality of cars.  The cars are usually criticized for both being junk and for being too racey, a difficult thing to do at the same time, lol.

2)  The weather was a series of just about everything except hot.  Tim was also exposed to 110 cars on track Saturday during a snowstorm, sleet, rain, muddy track, etc.  A true trial by fire in all the best ways.

3)  Vicki was out for a quick Friday practice to acclimate to the front wheel drive car and shake off some winter cobwebs.  Mother nature thought she was doing so well that she decided to bequeath unto Vicki almost an inch of sloppy snow/hail during her lap.  Vicki returned the favor and trimmed some of the grass for her as well.

4)  Tim was also able to cross off almost every type of weather during his Saturday stint.  However, we still give him a little good natured ribbing about his two black flags.

5)  The rest of the weekend was something you needed to be there to truly understand.

PS  Tim is desperately looking for a recipe from the pot luck

GHIT 0314:  Audra Tella on Autocross and a Pre-Intervention

It was almost spring, and we were thinking about ways to get out and start having fun with our cars again.  We thought it may be great to go autocross’ing, especially to start the season.  Since we were thinking autocross, we thought we’d invite Audra back to the podcast to talk all things autocross.  Audra Tella is one of the hosts of the Shifting Points podcast and is also one of the leads for the local BMW autocross group near Boston.  We talk about what to expect at your first event and what to do and more importantly what not to do to go to your first autocross event.  Then we launch our intervention plan.  This is part one of the plan.  Part two will be revealed in the next episode of the Shifting Points podcast coming out this Wednesday.  We started the podcast to get people started having fun with their cars.  Audra and her fellow podcast host are already enjoying their cars but, especially after seeing Audra last year at our Thompson race, we hoped we could offer to help them start driving or maybe even tracing on track.

Highlights for this episode include:

1)  What is autocross?  What you need to do to prep for the event and what you should NOT do to prep for the event or prevent you from going.  Bill goes full facetious for at least 15 minutes.

2)  Why are the cones there, what do they do and why does everyone seem to be angry with them.

3)  We break down the lingo a bit and show that your first event will be easy to start and learn.  Autocross drivers are very welcoming to everyone and would love to share their sport and all the fun.

4)  Audra introduces up to the internet.  It is a wonderful way to find an event close to you.

5)  How autocross is structured to even out the competition or break it down into groups of evenly matched cars.  Some even have special classes for novices.

6)  We also find out what vent is Audra Tella’s favorite event of the season.  We may have to attend.  Time to check the season schedule.

7)  What is Audra’s schedule for the season?  Can we add to the festivities?  Or are we just bad influences?  Still TBD on that one.

8)  Why we all started podcasts?

9)  The devious plan is devised and launched?  Our planning for the Mini Intervention.

10)  Audra makes a prediction of the potential livery theme.  Is she correct?  Tune into the second part of this episode on Audra’s Shifting Point podcast, coming soon, hopefully this Wednesday if life doesn’t get in the way of editing.

To hear how part two goes, subscribe to the Shifting Points podcast and the episode will be coming shortly.

Southern Fried Heaps Rally 2022 Day 1:

Jeff Stobbs and Donnie Petrunak join us to review the first day of the Southern Fried Heaps Rally 2022 that started in Mobile Alabama.  Highlights include a stop at a decommissioned battleship and a team driving a Studebaker that set a record for sourcing a spare part that may never be broken.  Tune in each day for a review of the highlights, lowlights, and spectacles of this years rally.

Southern Fried Heaps Rally 2022 Day 2:

At the conclusion of day 2 of the rally, Jeff Stobbs joins us again from the Mellow Mushroom to summarize another great day.  We are then joined by pirate Phyllis who was driving and plundering in their yellow C2 Corvette.  Next up for this episode we talk with Jake who competes in the “big block” rental car class after a last minute mechanical prep in the originally intended Dodge Diplomat entry.  Completing this episodes trifecta of entrants we talk with first time Lemons rallyist Enrique who entered with a fine example of classic 1979 German engineering from Mercedes Benz.

Overall highlights for the day include several of the teams attending the Amelia Island Concours d’LeMons (including a class “winner” on this very podcast) as well as as several great stops including a train museum and a rather unique petrified exhibit.

Southern Fried Heaps Rally 2022 Day 3:

The rally concludes today and Jeff Stobbs joins us again to summarize another great day.  Awards were given for several teams including the inaugural winner of the rental car class.  The teams were able to get to the NASA Kennedy space center. Despite their valiant efforts, no one was able to successfully talk NASA into sending their car into space.

If you are interested, the next rally is the four corners rally and will tour the area or Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah.

You can follow the progress of the rally on Instagram by following the hashtag #LemonsRally.  We do.

GHIT 0286:  Caroline Yun – Driver Progression

Caroline Yun is an avid high performance driving enthusiast who has recently worked her way up through the Southern California NASA HPDE ladder system and has begun her wheel to wheel and time trial (TT) racing career in Honda Challenge.  She recently completed here first ever endurance race at Sonoma with the award winning Initial Dingus team.  As Caroline is a relatively new driver and racer, we thought we would discuss with her the experiences that she has had with working her way through her very common car progression/growth scenario, some of the plusses and minuses of racing with your partner, how it has been to be a female driver and the first driver in her family’s perceptions of a lady race driver.

Highlights for this episode are:

1)  It all started with a haunting….

2)  We get a second opinion on the recent 24 Hours of Lemons race at Sonoma and since this was Caroline’s first ever wheel to wheel racing, it is always exciting and surprising, especially when most of your experience is in HPDE events.  Caroline and her team even took home some hardware from the event.

3)  Caroline gives a great description of what she learned and how her fellow drivers were at the event.

4)  We go into the differences in front wheel drive and rear wheel drive vehicles and the pleasure of driving a variety of configurations.

5)  It is surprise time for Jaime and we end up making decisions for him for this season.  Where we end up was exciting and perhaps even more surprising.

6)  We learn how Caroline learned about track driving and several stories of her first impressions and tips for others looking to try their first event.

7)  Caroline’s story of how important physical fitness is to driving in general and specifically for Caroline.  It even directly led to a new Mazda Miata MX-5.

8)  We share the plusses and minuses of racing with your significant other.

9)  Some of the potential complications of explaining that you are racing to your family and friend circle.

10)  We have a ton of fun (at Jamie’s expense) talking brake pads.

11)  Caroline and Bill make plans for another racing event.  We love plans.
