Professional Racing Driver and grassroots racer

GHIT 0265:  Kyle Lockrow Upcoming Professional Racing Driver

Kyle Lockrow is a racing driver who has worked his way from a grassroots racing hobby to a professional career that has reached the NASCAR level.  We had the opportunity to talk with him about his history and how amateur racing and especially amateur endurance racing has helped him progress and improve to the national level.  His story is still being written, but after meeting him, we are huge fans and wish him nothing but the best.  If that story isn’t inspiring enough, he did this in spite of racing with (our good friends at) Race Bar

For instance, leaving an Apple Podcast rating is very easy.  If you go to your podcast library, under shows and click on the podcast you can leave a (5?) star rating and enter your review.

Highlights from this episode include:

1)  We learn how Kyle has transitioned from amateur racing to being involved with NASCAR.  Believe it or not, racing our junk race cars has actually helped Kyle progress.

2)  What can you learn from amateur racing that transfers to higher levels and even the professional level.

3)  Kyle asks us about what our training regimen is and surprisingly, we actually had an answer he liked.

4)  Kyle’s schedule for 2022 is still to be finalized, but it sounds like a very busy year for him.

5)  How amateur endurance taught Kyle how to pass and be passed, as well as sharpens his ability to race other cars.

6)  Several of the differences between professional racing and amateur racing.  Surprisingly, some of the pro’s can even learn a few things from our amateur teams that would help them on a race weekend.

7)  Bill rambles through a question to try to quantify what the differences are between the driver pool in the pro series and the drivers in the amateur series drivers.  Kyle makes the best of Bill’s awkwardly worded question, lol.

8)  And then Kyle actually wanted to do our fast and furious story time questions.  We thank him for tolerating our little slice of insanity.

9)  We lose count of how often we made fun of Race Bar.  RACE BAR!!!!!

Sense of Speed

DwD 0264:  Improving Your Sense of Speed on Track

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we talk about ways to improve your sense of speed on a track.  This includes the commonly referred to “butt dyno”, but can also include several other ways and several other senses that the driver can use to determine their relative speed as well as their absolute speed.  We are sure we left out a few, but please let us know if you use something else, especially as your primary feedback.

GHIT 0262:  Jaime Garcia from the RaceFF podcast returns to Talk about his 1st wheel-to-wheel race and upcoming Endurance Racing Prep

Jaime Garcia returns to discuss his first Honda Challenge H2 race which was his first ever wheel to wheel race and satisfied his lifelong goal.  We also talk through his upcoming preparation for his new 24 Hours of Lemons endurance race.  In Jaime’s last episode he was driving back his car after getting the cage installed so we had to see how his event went.  Now we need to figure out how to get a photo of his (short) cross country exploits during the event.  (Jaimie, please send us a shot or a link to where it is)(Christmas is coming you know, lol).

We also start discussing some of the differences in racing a front wheel drive car vs a rear wheel drive platform.  Vicki is still going through some PTSD from her last race at Laguna Seca with Lucky Dog Racing League.  We also discuss Jaime’s upcoming preparation project for his endurance race.

3)  Tips we learned about renting car trailers from U-Haul.

4)  We walk through Jaime’s endurance race car plans and provide some tips and things we have learned, most the hard way, lol.

10)  Critical spares and parts to bring tot he track with you and how to decide what to bring and what not to bring.  We have a bit of a philosophy for each of our cars that dictates what we bring to an event.

11)  Bunches of little tips and tricks for detailing the last few percent of your car.

12)  We start planning a 2022 meetup and race.  Perhaps a honeymoon race?

GHIT 0261:  Our NJMP HPDE Event – Part Deux

We had a large group of drivers at the recent NASA Northeast HPDE event at NJMP’s Lightning course.  Since schedules did not fully coincide last week, we broke our group up into two different episodes.  We start off with our usual goals for the weekend and cover how the event went.  For this NJMP HPDE, we had Audra on who had never been to this track and was driving her 2017 BMW M2 for the weekend.  Adam came to the event and was going to use Bill’s M3 but due to mechanical issues, he had to use Vicki’s 1999 turbo NB Miata for one of his stints.  Elizabeth was trying her new to her SpecE30 on the track.  Lisa returns for a second visit on this event and drove Audra’s M2 at the event in the Hyperdrive session

Highlights from this episode include:

1)  We start off with our personal goals for the event.  Each event we try to make sure we each have at least one goal, but no more than 3 for the weekend.

2)  Elizabeth had a bit of motion sickness after going out with Bill as a passenger.  We may have found a cure for this, hopefully it will prevent motion sickness as well.  We will test this again at our next few events.

3)  Each level of the HPDE has a download session and some of the levels have classrooms during the weekend.  We discuss the benefits of each and offer some suggestions for further improvement.

4)  Highlights from the weekend and our traditional Good, Bad, and the Ugly

5)  Adam advanced from HPDE 1 to HPDE 2.

6)  Audra advanced from HPDE 1 to HPDE 2.

7)  Vicki advanced from HPDE 2 to HPDE 3.

8)  Elizabeth advanced from to HPDE 2.

Over Slowing for a Turn

Don't Drive Slowly

DwD 0260:  Over Slowing for a Turn and A Few Ways to Stop

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we talk through the importance of the entry speed into a turn.  One of the potential problems that comes in this area is learning how not to over slow for the turn.  There is very little that can be done to make up for that lost time and speed.  This can be the result of several different causes including trusting the tires or brakes, habits from street driving where you usually brake for every turn.  Over slowing has recently become one of our team’s bigger problems and one of the largest potential areas for improvement.  This will likely be part one of a few.
